Questions
Why Salvia?
Salvia is a Latin name derived from the words “to heal” and “to be healthy”. I took Latin for six years in grade school, and even though I was a miserable student, I maintained a great appreciation for the “dead” language. It is from this word that we also receive the English words “salve” and “sage”. A salve is a balm for open wounds. Sage is an herb used for healing, cleansing, and adding rich flavor. It is also a synonym for wisdom. Salvia is where wounds are cleansed and healed. It is a balm for the soul. It adds flavor to life, and I hope you will take part in its process.
How much are services?
I operate a little differently than other practices in the types of sessions I offer. For individual sessions, I offer three different lengths of sessions: 25 minutes, 50 minutes, and 90 minutes. 25 minute sessions are $65 (available to current clients only, focused on one issue or decision); 50 minute sessions are on a tiered-pricing system to make therapy more affordable; 90 minute sessions are $195.
I accept all credit and debit cards, HSA cards, and Venmo payments @SalviaCounseling. Third party payments (churches, work places, scholarship organizations) are accepted with agreement prior to first session.
Do you take insurance?
I do not bill insurance directly. If your insurance provider covers out-of-network services, I am happy to provide receipts or a Super Bill so that you may be reimbursed for your investment.
Why don’t you take insurance?
To put it bluntly, insurance companies want to dictate your care with little knowledge or awareness of what you need. In an effort to not be complicit in the Mental Health Industrial Complex, I offer multiple self-pay services so that you are able to maintain control of your health care as well as your private health information, and to keep costs down as insurance billing requires additional paperwork with unpredictable results.
Who do you work with?
I work with humans age 18 and older who seek care for: complex trauma, generational trauma, identity and sexuality, mood disorders, women’s health issues, chronic illness, adult children of addiction, families impacted by addiction, and borderline personality disorder. I also teach and speak for groups and organizations who want to learn trauma-informed care, emotional intelligence, and conflict resolution.
Why is therapy so expensive?
Like other healthcare professions, being a mental health professional requires years of education, training, liability insurance, overhead costs, and continuing education and licensing. It is an investment on both my part and yours. I aim to keep my rates both competitive and reasonable, and am constantly monitoring comparable services in my area to do so.
What if I can’t afford therapy?
I do offer a sliding scale option for people who have varying financial means. I never want money to get in the way of you getting what you need when it comes to your mental health. If you are interested in care and need a reduced rate, please reach out to me. I bet we can make it work. There are also many programs and organizations that offer free and subsidized therapy assistance. See the Resources page for more details.
What do you do to relieve stress?
I love to swim laps, take my dog for long walks, go to the beach, read, bake, cook, travel, and write. My husband, Tim, and I also do funny voices together and enjoy fighting over who gets to pick the next movie. Our three cats allow me to snuggle them…sometimes.
